Etymology (name origin)
The name derives from the Latin Apulia meaning land of Iapudes, the autochthonous Italic tribe of the area.
Geography
Apulia borders Molise to the north, Campania to the west, Basilicata to the southwest, the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the southeast. Apulia is located at the "stiletto" of the Italian peninsula. This region is mostly flat and the Tavoliere delle Puglie plain, covering a surface of c. 3,000 km2, is the second largest plain of the country. Apulia is articulated in a mainland and two peninsulas, the Salento in the south, projecting into the Gulf of Taranto and representing the south-eastern extremity of Italy, and the Gargano Promontory, that is the only mountainous part of the region, consisting of the external Apennine thrust belt.
