Etymology (name origin) |
In the Greek and Roman Age, the region was defined with different names, relating to autochthonous tribes, as Brutium and Ausonia. The Greek settlers of the Magna Graecia/ Megalę Hellas period named the areas Enotria, meaning land of wine. The present name refers to the Byzantine duchy of Calabria, a toponym deriving from the Italic cala, meaning rock. |
Geography |
Calabria is mostly a peninsula bordered by Basilicata to the north, Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the east; it is adjacent to Sicily to the south via the Strait of Messina. The 90% of its territory is mountainous and its highest peak is Serra Dolcedorme, part of the Pollino massif (2,267 m): the coastline measures 800 km. Calabria is located at the "toe" of the Italian peninsula on a strip of land measuring 240 km long and just 32 km wide at its most narrow point. |
