Pompeii's archaeological site |
|
Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried, during a catastrophic eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 b.C. Magma and mud perfectly kept and preserved the ruins until the excavations' rediscovery in the 19th century. The archeological site includes the entire Roman town as if it had been frozen from the moment of its destruction. In the picture you can see the main square or "forum", and the market place, called "macellum".
