Etymology (name origin)
The name derives from the Latin Sardinia, translation of the Greek Sardonia, meaning land of Sardi, a Proto-Indo-European tribe that was subsequently overwhelmed by Phoenician and Mycenaean civilizations.
Geography
Sardinia is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, and its surface measures 24,090 km. Sardinia territory is characterized by prairie, mountainous inlands and coastal plains. The highest peak is Mount Gennargentu, measuring 1,834 m.
