Etymology (name origin)
The name derives from basilikos which was the Byzantine official in charge of administrating the region during the Hellenistic rule. Others argue that the name may infer to the Basilica of Acerenza which held judicial power in the Middle Ages. In the Roman Age, Basilicata was known as Lucania, named after the tribes which populated the region in the Iron Age.
Geography
Basilicata borders Campania to the west, Apulia (Puglia) to the east, Calabria to the south. It has two short coastlines, one on the Tyrrhenian Sea and another on the Ionian Sea. Basilicata surface covers 9,995 kmē, is mostly mountainous, being covered by the Lucan-Apennine chain. The Pollino massif (2.267 m) and the Sirino massif (2.005 m) are the highest peaks of this region. The area surrounding Matera, close to the Apulian border, is plain and highly cultivated.
