| Etymology (name origin) |
| Abruzzo was originally known as Province of Valeria, a name related to the Valeria Way, an important Roman road which linked the region to Rome; afterwards the name was turned into the present form which derives from Latin Aprutium, name contraction of ad Preatutios, meaning "the ones who live close to Praetuti", an old village contiguous to the present Teramo. |

| Abruzzo borders the region of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and southwest, Molise to the southeast and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Its surface covers 10,794 km2, is mostly mountainous and its highest point is Corno Grande, at 2914m above sea-level, part of Gran Sasso massif, the highest peak of Apennine Mountains. The main river is Pescara-Aterno. This region is protected by four important parks. |
