Virgin Mary's Assumption Church and Palazzo
Foto Sulmona: Virgin Mary's Assumption Church and Palazzo
This religious complex includes the Palazzo of Annunciation, that was originally built as a hospital, and the church. The palazzo, built in the 1500 and lately remodelled, features two cornice decorations, point arch headed windows and a portal of Gothic style, and a Baroque entrance topped with a massive pediment. Noteworthy are the statues adorning the front; today it houses a museum. The church was redesigned in the late Baroque style in the 1700 and has a flamboyant facade decorated with columns and broken pediments.

In the centre of Piazza XX Settembre, you can see the statue of Ovid - Publius Ovidius Naso, great Latin poet and author of Metamorphoses, who was born in Sulmona - put on a travertine plinth. In the background you can see a remarkable palazzo of Renaissance taste with an impressive decoration of round and broken segmental pediments topping the windows.

Piazza Garibaldi is an important city square housing several main sights: in the background you can see the medieval aqueduct built in 1256. The massive structure is perfectly preserved and includes 21 arches. On the right is the Romanesque front of San Francesco church. In the foreground is the Delvecchio Fountain, named after the important local family that patronaged its construction.
