Foto Maiori: St. Francis Church and Convent
Going back to 1400, the church, placed on the convent side, was rebuilt many times and went through various restorations. The ceramic image of St. Francis placed above the entrance portal was added in the 1938. Walking along the nave you can see some remarkable works of art: "the Holy Spirit adored by Angels", a fresco of the eighteenth-century Neapolitan School, St. Francis with the stigmata (1598), and the Madonna del Soccorso Our Lady of Assistance (about 1500)

Placed on an obelisk, the statue representing the Holy Virgin Mary is pointing the sea to commemorate when some sailors in the 1200 found a wooden Madonna with the Child, abandoned by a ship in trouble, coming from Constantinople. The local feast called "Maronn‘e' notte", Holy Virgin in the night, commemorates every year the said event.
