The Caserta Royal Palace is an UNESCO world heritage site. It was designed by the renowned Flemish born Luigi Vanvitelli (Van Wittell); the construction was begun in the second half of 1700 for the Borbone kings of Naples and it summarizes the opulent style of other older European royal palaces like the ones in Versailles or Schoenbrunn. The residence is renowned for the beauty of its English and Italian gardens that house remarkable fountains and an impressive cascade.

Old Caserta is the medieval town, which was lately abandoned in favour of the modern Caserta that was established in plain close to the Royal Palace. Casertavecchia's cathedral features Sicilian-Moorish decorations like arabesques and Romanesque blind arches motifs enframing the arabesques.
