| Etymology (name origin) |
It is a compound name. Friuli derives from forum Iulii, Latin name of the town of Cividale, ancient capital of the region and founded by Julius Caesar: in fact, the toponym means town of Julius Caesar.
Venezia Giulia is a name suggested by Graziadio Ascoli, Italian patriot and linguist of the 19th century, to define the narrow strip of land surrounding Trieste that was part of the Empire of Austria-Hungary. Venezia-Giulia linked the gulf of Venice to the peninsula of Istria that was highly disputed between Venice, Austria and Yugoslavia and nowadays is part of Croatia. |

| Friuli-Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region with special statute, constituted by the two historic regions of Friuli and Venezia Giulia, comprising German and Slovene minorities. This region borders Veneto to the west, Austria to the north, Slovenia to the northeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the south. Half of the region is covered by the Alps, while the majority of the rest of the territory is hilly. Mount Coglians (m. 2780) is the highest peak of this region. |
