Geography
Veneto borders Emilia-Romagna to the south, Lombardy to the west, Trentino-Alto Adige to the northwest, Austria to the north and Friuli Venezia Giulia to the northeast. The topography of this region is characterized by a great variety. In the south, is Polesine, a former marshy area, and the Padan Plain. The centre of the region is dominated by the hilly Colli Euganei and the Colli Berici. In the north are the Prealps and the Dolomites. The latter are mostly located in the Belluno Province and they extend from the Adige river to the Piave valley. Monte Antelao is the highest mountain in the eastern Dolomites and the highest peak in Veneto. The coastline features sandy beaches and two lagoons: the Venetian Lagoon is the most important. It stretches from the Piave basin to the Brenta in the south, with a surface area of around 550 km². In the west, close to the Trentino and Lombardy borders is Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy. Veneto is also crossed by many important rivers such Po, Adige, Brenta and Piave.
