The Two Towers
Foto Bologna: The Two Towers
The Garisenda Tower is the town's symbol; today the height is 48 mt; it was originally 60 mt high, and then cut off in the 14th century to avoid a collapse. On the right you can see the Asinelli Tower (97 mt. high), with craftsmen shops under the porch. In the medieval Bologna you could count a hundred of aristocratic towers with military functions but only a few remain today.
Neptune Square and Major Square

In a close up, the monumental Neptune fountain. In the background the Major Square with the Notaries Palace (Ancient Notaries Corporation seat) and on the right the D'Accursio Palace and its clock tower. The latter palazzo was originally built as Francis Accursio's house; Accursio was a renowned master of law in the Bologna University; the building was then turned into the seat of the Elderlies (the medieval magistracy) and today is the Town Hall seat.
St. Petronius Basilica

Church dedicated to the town patron, it is the main Bolognese Church. The building works began in 1390 and ended many years after. The unfinished facade houses many sculptures of Jacopo della Quercia, Amico Aspertini and Alfonso Lombardi. St. Petronio is the sixth greatest world church in the world; the initial project meant to surpass even St. Peter Basilica in Rome but this purpose was hindered by Pope Pio VI
