Reggio Emilia Cathedral overlooks piazza Prampolini. The structure dates back to the 9th century: built originally in Romanesque style, it was remodelled in the following centuries, especially during Renaissance. The unfinished facade has on the upper side a golden copper statue representing the Virgin Mary.

Piazza Prampolini is the heart of the city, actually formerly known as Grand Piazza. Here you can find the most important religious and civic buildings as the cathedral and the town hall. Noteworthy is the Palazzo del Monte, encompassing a belfry, and the Crostoso fountain which represents the allegory of the river flowing through Reggio.

| Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Ghiara |

The Basilica, also called The Temple of the Blessed Virgin of Ghiara, was built in 1596 in response to an alleged miracle. A deaf believer was healed while he prayed a votive icon of the Ghiara Madonna. The interior is frescoed by the Carracci school.
