St. Mark's Square
Foto Venezia: St. Mark's Square
View of the beautiful St. Mark's Square," the drawing room of Europe". The square, the only one called "piazza" by Venetians, the other ones being called "campi", is surrounded by delicious buildings and important monuments. The piazza is full of cafeteria and shops. In close-up the Ducal Palace and the St. Mark's Basilica. The latter is probably the most famous church of Venice; it is not the city cathedral (which is San Piero di Castello) and was originally built as Doge's private chapel.

The church is a remarkable example of Venetian baroque architecture. The magnificent and shining Basilica, built with white Istrian marble, has a round nave and an octagonal base; it was built by the Venetians to thank the Madonna for freeing the city by the plague in 1630. It stands at the end of the Grand Canal.
Grand Canal and Rialto's Bridge

Fantastic view of the Grand Canal, or "Canal Grande", that splits Venice in two. Its banks are lined with some of the most beautiful buildings and palazzos of the city. Three bridges cross the channel; the most famous is the Rialto's bridge; it was built in 1588 to substitute an older one made of wood.
