Geography |
Piedmont borders Aosta Valley to the north-west, Switzerland to the north, France to the west, Liguria to the south, Emilia Romagna to the southeast and Lombardy to the east. There are Occitan speaking minorities. About half of the Piedmont territory is mountainous. In the north Piedmont is covered by Alps. Along the borders with Liguria and Emilia-Romagna are the Apennines. Monte Rosa massif is the highest peak, measuring 4,634m. In the region is located the core of the Po basin. River Po itself starts from Monviso, in the Cottian Alps, and passes through the Piedmontese side of the Padan Plain. The region is drained by several watercourses and lakes. The main rivers are Tanaro, Ticino, Dora Baltea and Agogna. The most relevant lakes are Lake Maggiore, Lake Orta, Lake Viverone and Lake Mergozzo. 7.7 % of the Piedmont territory is a protected area. |
